St. Monica Sodality

Prayer and Perserverance
St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine, is noted for her devotion to her son and for her persistent prayer for his conversion to Christianity.  She also prayed unceasingly for her husband (from an arranged marriage) to convert from his pagan beliefs, which he did--albeit very late in life. and a year before his death.  Her mother-in-law also converted.

Many Catholic Churches throughout the country have societies devoted to preserving the ideals and exemplify the lifestyle of St. Monica.  St. Monica is the Patron Saint of Abused Women.

St. Monica Sodality's Mission
Under the patronage of St. Monica, the Sodality at St. Augustine is a service and prayer organization within the Church. Membership.  It is open to any woman of St. Augustine Church interested in sharing in the organization's objectives. Major projects include the Annual Christmas Sale (held in December) and the Madonna Plan (an annual collection for mothers and children in need, held in March).

If you're looking for culture, you'll want to attend the annual St. Monica Sodality concert. Sometimes it's song. Last year the concert was a dance festival with young people from all over Memphis tapping and stepping and dancing their way into people's hearts.

The organization also assumes responsibility for representing the Parish at the Memphis Deanery and Diocesan Meetings of the Council of Catholic Women. Meetings are held the fourth Sunday of each month.  Lillie Robinson leads the St. Monica Sodality.

Return to Committees and Groups - Leaders

On April 27, 2008, St. Monica Sodality's Annual Spring Concert featured the Harriet Jubilee Performers, with Chrysti Chandler (Artistic Director) and Derek Gague (Music Director).

The Special Guest Artist was Valetta Brinson, Soloist.  The event, "A Tribute to African Americans' Struggle for Freedom," commemorated the 40th Anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, and was followed with a reception immediately following in the W.P. Porter Gymnasium.

The proceeds from the sale of event tickets, which were inexpensively priced at $5, were donated to the Church.
