Social Action Committee
Social Action Committee
A parish that worships together in Church, without bringing that worship to the community, misses a vital link in Christian living. The Social Action Committee helps St. Augustine Parish recognize the importance of social justice, and its impact on the lives of the South Memphis community. In particular, the focus for 2008 is on how to improve the lives of those in zip code 38106.
The Social Action Committee steers our focus to international issues of war and peace, as well as poverty and environmental issues, while deepening our sense of the Church's commitment ot social justice.
St. Augustine is a member of Shelby County Interfaith (SCI), a community based social justice action group in Memphis. Various issue the committee has addressed with SCI include: the digital divide, health and wellness in the Memphis community, and the evils of predatory lending.
The Social Action Committee meets each month on the Second Tuesday. Wanda Gordon leads the Social Action Committee. Leon Jones (ljones@staugustinememphis.org) represents the Social Action Committee on the Parish Pastoral Council.
“One of the natural signs of a true Paulist is that he would prefer to suffer from the excesses of liberty rather than from the arbitrary actions of tyranny.”
